Karla Arroyo Recently Received a Prestigious Award
This week I had the privilege of being recognized by the Salt Lake Area Domestic Violence Coalition with the empowerment award. As I received this award and listened to the nomination, I felt humbled and wished all those who have been alongside me making a difference in the field of domestic violence could be there. After many years of advocacy and grassroots efforts the Latino community has come together to acknowledge the existence of domestic violence. Today, with the Latino Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CoLAVI) fully developed and implemented, we see the result of long afternoons and endless nights filled with conversations about ideas, barriers, strengths and names of leaders and allies in the field.
South Valley Sanctuary not only offers safe shelter and in-house support services but also houses the only Latino Coalition Against Domestic Violence in the State of Utah. The mission of this coalition is to increase awareness and education on domestic violence dynamics, its effects and the perpetuation of this societal cancer in the behavior of our children. CoLAVI works from a community based approach and is solely funded by the sponsorships of other for profit and non-profit organizations and in-kind donations from businesses. South Valley Sanctuary does not allocate funds to the coalition as our main purpose is to use the general operating funds toward providing life saving resources such as shelter and case management services to those escaping their homes seeking peace and safety.
